Abstract
LadakhȱregionȱincludesȱLehȱandȱKargilȱdistrictsȱofȱJammuȱandȱKashmirȱinȱIndia.ȱTheȱregionȱisȱcoldȱ
andȱaridȱlimitingȱtheȱgrowingȱofȱfruitȱcrops.ȱTheȱstudyȱaimsȱtoȱcharacterizeȱwalnutȱdiversityȱinȱtheȱ
regionȱ whichȱ wouldȱ beȱ resourcefulȱ inȱ theȱ nearȱ futureȱ forȱ variousȱ purposesȱ andȱ boostȱ upȱ walnutȱ
cultivation.ȱFourȱgenotypesȱareȱselectedȱfromȱvariousȱwalnutȱgrowingȱareasȱofȱLadakhȱ viz. G 1ȱ fromȱ
Skara,ȱG 2ȱ fromȱNurla,ȱG 3ȱ fromȱTemisgamȱandȱG 4ȱ fromȱDhomkhar.ȱItȱwasȱevidentȱthatȱmajorityȱofȱtheȱ
genotypesȱexhibitedȱintermediateȱtreeȱvigourȱwithȱspreadingȱnatureȱofȱgrowthȱhabit,ȱglabrousȱshootȱ
pubescenceȱandȱleafȱandȱrachisȱpubescence,ȱstrongȱshellȱsealȱandȱshellȱstrengthȱwithȱgoodȱnutȱdiameterȱ
andȱnutȱlength,ȱsatisfactoryȱkernelȱflavor,ȱwellȱfilledȱkernelȱandȱeasyȱremovalȱofȱkernelȱhalves.ȱLeafletȱ
shapeȱobservedȱwasȱelliptic,ȱleafletȱmarginȱwasȱentire,ȱgreenȱleafȱandȱrachisȱcolour,ȱbrownȱshootȱcolour,ȱ
completeȱshellȱintegrityȱandȱkernelȱplumpnessȱwasȱmoderateȱinȱallȱtheȱfourȱgenotypes.ȱTheȱbranchingȱ
habitȱwasȱdenseȱinȱgenotypesȱG 3 ȱandȱG 4 ,ȱintermediateȱinȱG 1 ȱandȱintermediateȱtoȱdenseȱinȱG 2 .ȱInȱgeneral,ȱ
theȱhighestȱvalueȱofȱleafȱlengthȱandȱkernelȱpercentageȱwasȱrecordedȱinȱG 2 .ȱG 3 ȱexhibitedȱtheȱmaximumȱ
widthȱofȱleaf,ȱnumberȱofȱleaflets,ȱinshellȱnutȱweightȱandȱkernelȱweight.ȱTheȱnutȱshapeȱwasȱbroadȱtoȱ
ovateȱinȱG 2 ȱandȱG 3 ,ȱwhileȱG 1 ȱwasȱbroadȱovateȱandȱG 4 ȱwasȱbroadȱellipticȱinȱshape.ȱTheȱshellȱtextureȱofȱ
G 2 ȱandȱG 4 ȱwasȱmediumȱwhileȱG 3 ȱwasȱmediumȱtoȱroughȱandȱG 1ȱ wasȱrough.ȱTheȱshellȱcolourȱofȱG 1 ȱwasȱ
light,ȱmediumȱinȱG 2 ,ȱlightȱtoȱmediumȱinȱG 3 ȱandȱmediumȱtoȱdarkȱinȱG 4 .ȱTheȱshellȱthicknessȱrecordedȱ
theȱmaximumȱinȱG 4 .ȱTheȱkernelȱcolourȱwasȱlightȱinȱG 2 ȱandȱG 4 ,ȱwhileȱextraȱlightȱandȱlightȱtoȱamberȱwasȱ
observedȱinȱG 1ȱ ȱandȱG 3ȱ respectively.
