Abstract
IronȱtolerantȱcallusȱlinesȱofȱIndicaȱriceȱVars.ȱKhandagiriȱandȱJagannathȱhasȱbeenȱachievedȱonȱMurashigeȱ
andȱSkoogȱ(MS)ȱmediumȱsupplementedȱwithȱ1.0ȱmg/lȱKinetin,ȱ3.0ȱmg/lȱ2,4-D,ȱ12ȱmMȱFe.ȱSomaticȱembryosȱ
derivedȱfromȱbothȱtolerantȱnon-tolerantȱcallusesȱareȱgerminatedȱonȱMSȱmediumȱsupplementedȱwithȱ
1.0ȱmg/lȱ6-benzylaminopurineȱ(BA),ȱ0.25ȱmg/lȱ1-napthalen-eaceticȱacidȱ(NAA)ȱandȱ12ȱmMȱFeȱwithinȱ
fourȱweeksȱofȱsubculture.ȱTheȱgrowthȱparametersȱlikeȱfreshȱandȱdryȱweightȱofȱcallus,ȱgrowthȱtoleranceȱ
index,ȱenzymeȱactivityȱ(CatalaseȱandȱPeroxidase)ȱandȱbiochemicalȱmarkersȱwereȱusedȱasȱindicatorsȱ
ofȱironȱtolerance.ȱMeasurementsȱasȱearlyȱasȱtwoȱweeksȱafterȱtheȱbeginningȱofȱtheȱtreatmentsȱdidȱnotȱ
yieldȱconsistentȱresults.ȱHowever,ȱtheȱgrowthȱtoleranceȱindexȱinȱtheȱfourȱweeksȱafterȱtheȱbeginningȱ
ofȱ treatmentsȱ yieldedȱ significantȱ differencesȱ amongȱ non-tolerantȱ andȱtolerantȱ calluses.ȱ Theȱ enzymeȱ
activityȱisȱenhancedȱinȱtheȱtolerantȱcallusesȱthanȱnon-tolerantȱone.ȱTheȱ in vitro ȱraisedȱplantletsȱderivedȱ
fromȱtolerantȱcallusȱlinesȱareȱgrownȱ in vitro ȱinȱtheȱpresenceȱofȱBA,ȱNAAȱandȱ12ȱmMȱiron.ȱTheȱtolerantȱ
plantletsȱareȱestablishedȱinȱtheȱpotsȱwithȱiron-richȱsoil.ȱThisȱstudyȱwillȱhelpȱtoȱdevelopȱironȱtolerantȱriceȱ
plantsȱforȱbreedingȱprogram.

    15,000ȱtraditionalȱriceȱvarietiesȱoutȱofȱ50,000ȱfoundȱ ofȱtheȱirrigatedȱandȱrainfedȱlandsȱofȱtheȱworldȱareȱ
    inȱtheȱworldȱ(Kshirsagarȱ et al .ȱ2012).ȱTheȱcultivationȱ underȱriceȱcultivation.ȱDueȱtoȱnutrientȱdeficiencyȱorȱ
    andȱ productionȱ ofȱ riceȱ areȱ declinedȱ dueȱ toȱ abioticȱ toxicity,ȱriceȱproductionȱhasȱbeenȱreducedȱinȱaboutȱ
