Energy consumption in agricultural production has been emerging a major issue after the advent of green revolution in the mid-sixties in India. Further, the structure of energy consumption has undergone a paradigm shift from traditional energy sources viz., animal energy and farmyard manure to modern energy sources viz., tractor for farming operations, and electricity and diesel are largely used for ground water irrigation. Agriculture by its very nature is an energy conversion process and it is not only a consumer of energy but it is also a producer of energy. In agricultural operation, various sources of energy are used viz., human labour, animal labour, diesel engine, electric motor, power tiller, tractor, seed fertilizer and farmyard manure. In the area of energy consumption, energy use efficiency is most important issue. The policies suggested in the area of energy consumption for efficient use of energy in agricultural production has been found immensely useful.
