Medicinal plants are the plants that possess therapeutic properties or exert beneficial pharmacological effect on the human or animal body. These plants are important part of our natural wealth. Since ancient times, plants with therapeutic properties have secured an important place in the healing practices and treatment of diseases. Our country is rich with diversity of medicinal plants. Among the herbal raw drugs, 90% is used in the manufacture of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani & Homoeopathy systems of medicine is largely from the wild. This wild source is gradually decreasing day-by-day. In this context, conservation and sustainable use of medicinal plants is very much needed. Cultivation of these plants is clearly a sustainable alternative to the present collection of medicinal plants from the wild. This can be treated as the potential source of handsome returns to the farmers.
